It isn’t about what everyone else thinks, it’s about what you think. That’s all that’s ever truly mattered.

Being a Gentleman Never Goes Out of Style: College.?

College.

As my fourth and final year of college is coming to a close, I’d like to share some tips for any incoming freshmen, transfers or simply a struggling student.

  • Go to class. Simple as that. There’s no harm in going to class and missing class is more detrimental to you in the long run. If you know you can’t make it class at the beginning of the term then don’t schedule yourself for those types of classes. If you’re a morning person, try to schedule morning classes and if you’re an afternoon/night person then schedule classes for that time. Schedule classes at times where you feel the most comfortable. Now, I’m not saying that you can’t miss a class or two but don’t make a habit of it.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you’re struggling, go to section. If those still don’t help, go to the TA or Professor’s office hours. I’ve learned that no professor really wants to fail a student. So if you need help, don’t be afraid to ask. It’s honestly not that big of a deal. They’re there to help, so make use of it if you need it.
  • Make friends. Talk to people, meet new people. Break out of your shell. College is one of the best times to figure out who you truly are and what you want to do. I guess that’s why when people go off to college and come back, most of the time others will say “they’ve changed.” Ultimately, be yourself.
  • Find a balance between play and work. Time management is the biggest skill you need to learn to be successful in life. All work and no play means you aren’t going to have time to have fun and all play and no work means that the likelihood of you passing your classes is relatively low. Creating a balance between the two is key. Knowing when you can go out and party versus studying is crucial. It all depends on yourself and your motivation to actually buckle down and study when you have to.
  • Major in something you like or enjoy. There’s really no point in majoring in something you despise. It’s silly to. You’re going to be stuck with a degree in something you dislike and most likely will get a job that is somehow related to that degree. So you’re going to be stuck in a job that you hate. Find something that you enjoy and pursue it. Even if it’s not a luxurious type of major, if you enjoy it that’s all that matters.
  • Spend your time wisely. College is still a safety net. It is the last step before venturing off into the real world. Get things done, be productive, have fun, live life, make mistakes. It’s your last chance to goof off but by all means do not take it as an opportunity to slack off.
  • Try your best to grow up. Again, college is the last step before the real world. Nobody is going to baby you in the real world. The transition from high school to college may be easier for some while it’s a struggle for others. You just need to try your best to try to become a responsible and mature adult. Although, it doesn’t seem that some people will ever grow up.
  • Most of all, enjoy your college experience. It’ll have its ups and downs, good and bad. Enjoy your time in college, it truly is an experience.

These are just some of the things I’ve learned during my four years. Maybe it’ll help, maybe it won’t. These are just some tips I thought might help some people who are worried about college or stressing out about it.
